Christmas and Surprises

What a busy Christmas weekend we had, lots of driving. We're getting into a routine again, which feels good.

Christmas celebrations began on Saturday. The Gillman side of the family came over to our place for breakfast and gifts. It was low-key and enjoyable.

That same day we headed to Miami for the night.

Sarah and I wore similar shirts, unplanned.
Mom put Brady and Ollie to work.
On Sunday after Miami Wards Christmas Program, we headed to Safford. Here's the story. Grandma Bingham had finished Sarah's quilt and wanted to give it to her as a surprise. She wanted to do it at Thanksgiving, but my mom talked her into waiting until Christmas so I could be there and so that I can surprise Grandpa Bingham with his gift.

So we go to Safford, eat dinner, hang out and Grandma surprised Sarah with her quilt. Sarah was shocked and happy.

Then I surprised Grandpa, and Grandma as well, with my gift. I mentioned earlier that I entered a drawing into the State Fair in October. Well I can finally reveal it here.
You can click on it to see it larger (looks better in real life). This is drawn from Grandpa's high school football picture.
I decided against drawing a celebrity for the fair this year. I wanted to do something personal and I had tons of pictures of Grandma and Grandpa from the 60th anniversary video that Brady and I put together. I loved this picture and Grandpa is one of my favorite men ever, so there we go.
While at the State Fair.
I'm happy to say that Grandpa was not only surprised, but also touched. Tears were shed. He told me that he was about 17 or 18 when that picture was taken and also that they didn't have enough jerseys for everyone so that had to switch when taking the pictures.
I love this man so much.

We hang out the rest of the day and visited my Dad and Grandma Buckley before heading back to Miami for the night.

Oliver playing with one of new toys from his Mamie. They're magnetic block things, and we made them into a microphone. He loves singing!
Watching Grandpa's trains
We came back to Mesa on Christmas Eve. Brady had to work most of the day, which didn't make me happy, but it turned out ok, and he was able to come home a couple hours earlier than expected.

Sarah had to take care of one her friends chickens while they were out of town, so we joined her. Ollie loved the chickens and was even brave enough to touch them.
So we watched White Christmas, ate mexican food and read The Night Before Christmas and then Ollie went to bed.

Santa came!
And went overboard
Ollie was so cute and immediately went to his new tricycle from Santa.

Check out that face!
He also got his own little table and chairs. He sits at it all the time to play with his blocks.
My mom surprised me with a new sewing machine. I didn't ask for one but needed one. I'm excited to use it.
The rest of the day was pretty low key, we watched movies, ate food and tried and failed at seeing Les Miserables (the theater was slammed).

It was a Merry Christmas. I hope everyone else had a great time as well.

Fire Pit and a Sheep

In the backyard of our awesome rental house is a fire pit. When we moved in, Brady I couldn't wait to use it. With the weather finally getting cooler, Brady decided that Saturday was the day to give it a try. We ate sloppy joes and french fries for dinner around the fire and roasted marshmallows and made s'mores. It was fun and relaxing. Sadly Ollie didn't care too much for any of this and just wandered around until he got cranky. He just wanted to go inside and read books, silly book worm.
Mad scouting skills
Mmmm. S'mores.
In our new ward, the news of Brady's video skills has already spread. He was recruited to help film and edit a video for the ward Christmas party, a reenactment of the nativity done by the nursery and sunbeams. Sunday was film day, it was a little nutso when the nursery kids joined in as the angels and sheep. I won't be able to post the finished video since other peoples young kids are stars of it but here are a couple of pictures of Oliver as a sheep.

He wouldn't wear the full costume but he would wear the hat. The leaders were taking what they could get.

The two seconds that Ollie actually sat still. He was one of the worst kids, just running around everywhere.

Book Worm

I don't know why, but Oliver has become obsessed with reading lately. He has always liked books and they have always been his favorite "toy", but this past week or two, he's been asking to be read to like 20 times a day. That's a lot.

His current favorites are "Green Eggs and Ham" (about 5 times a day), "Hop on Pop" (about 3 times a day), "Go, Dog. Go!" and "Cowardly Clyde". I really enjoy reading to him so this is great fun for me.

And just for fun, here is a sketch I did of Ollie today during church.

All about Ollie

I think I finally earned my Mom's Badge yesterday. After Ollie had been in bed for a couple of hours he woke up crying a little bit, which isn't out of the norm for him, but since he didn't go back to sleep I decided to check on him and found that he had puked everywhere! He has never really vomited like this before. He had dragged his head through it as well so clean up was not quick and easy. I'm proud of myself for not heaving myself, the smell was pretty bad. After a bath and everything being put in the laundry, Oliver threw up again in the living room, lucky with the hard wood floor, it was much easier to clean up. He threw up one more time but this time I had something ready for him to throw up in. By the time Brady got home, Ollie was finally ready to go back to sleep. Sadly he woke up at his normal time of 7:30am, but at least he's happy and keeping food down.

In healthier days, Ollie and I went to the park recently, he loves it a lot. Especially the slide, he would go up the stairs and down the slide over and over again, probably 20 times in a row. He could do it all by himself too.

Saying "cheese"

Oliver has learned a lot since our Disney trip. Mostly in the language department. His word count has at least doubled. He says "Woody" for everything Toy Story. He can say "car". He can say and point to on himself, "eyes, nose, mouth, teeth, hair, and ears". He also says "shoe" and "ball". I think I've figured out that when he says "bwa, bwa" that means Mama. He stopped saying "Thank you" and replaced it with "Please", because he gets something out it. He says doggie and blankie, but just the last syllable, "gie". He loves the gie's.

Now here are some pictures from the State Fair this last Saturday, we brought my mom and Sarah along to show off my drawing. I'm still picking my time to show it on the blogs, but if you go the fair, be sure to scope it out.

Goats being judged.

Love the rabbits

Ollie loved the chicks and the chickens

Disneyland! 2012!

We're back from vacation! A much needed vacation. My mom took us to Disneyland for a couple of days and we had a great time. Ollie did amazing on this trip. Very few breakdowns. I'm going to get this whole trip on one post, so let's look at pictures.
One day, Ollie wore his monkey leash for a few hours, by choice. So I figured wearing it at Dland was going to be no problem.
On our trip into California, we made a slight detour to check out the Redlands Temple. Visiting temples on vacations is a family tradition that Brady is learning to accept.

Ollie and his Gigi

I think Ollie was just running, but he looks funny/cute.

I don't know why, but we put Oliver on the grass and he went baby on us and wouldn't put his limbs down. We got a good laugh.

Pretty sister Sarah
We got to Anaheim, ate some dinner at Knotts Berry Farm and the woke up for Disneyland!

Best time to go to Disneyland
The view
The first stop was Fantasyland for Peter Pan. Oliver hated waiting in line, but we made it through. Sarah and Gigi got on the ride first and waved to Ollie as they took off. That didn't go over well, but once we were on and moving he seemed to like it. Really I think the dark rides, which are the movie themed rides were a bit overwhelming to Ollie and he seemed a little catatonic on them.

In line for...something.
He plugs his ears a lot nowadays. We think, he thinks, that it sounds cool.
Dumbo! 2nd time ever riding this ride for me. Oliver laughed on this one.
Family shot!
Carousel time
Getting ready.
He likes it!
He really likes it!
The girls
The boys
Going into it's a small world. Ollie really liked this one.
After we've had enough of Fantasyland, and had a lost ticket incident (my ticket, followed by a meltdown by yours truly), we headed to Tomorrowland. Got some fastpasses to Star Tours and rode Buzz Lightyear. We had gotten free fastpasses to Space Mountain because of said lost ticket and went on that, why utilizing the child swap passes for the first time, which are pretty sweet. We then did the new and so very much improved, Star Tours. It was awesome!
Grr. Brady.

Konked out baby!
Over to Frontierland for some Dole Whips and the Tiki Room. Oliver loved the Tiki Room. He jumped out of his seat to dance.

In line for the Jungle Cruise

Mom and me on Jungle Cruise.

Next we did Pirates, the only ride I was worried about for Oliver, because of the drops. But he did great and didn't even react to them. He liked the ride when the pirates were singing and applauded when the town was burning. Funny kid.

Sarah, Brady and I went on Splash Mountain, which is always a blast. I think I had the most fun...

Brady and I really wanted to eat somewhere new this trip and chose the Cafe Orleans. Great choice, great food. I would eat there again.
While waiting to be seated for dinner, Ollie sure loved playing with this sign. He kept putting his mouth on it too.

After Haunted Mansion and Big Thunder, we decided to head back to the hotel. We were tired.

The next day, we explored California Adventure. This place has changed so much since we had last been there. But I took less pictures. Here we go.

We got our fastpasses to World of Color as well as to the Cars Land, Radiator Springs Racers. We first tried the Little Mermaid ride, Ariels Undersea Adventure. We were impressed by this, the animatronics, were really good and ride was simple, not fast, and musical. We decided to hit up California Screamin and did the carousel by that area next.
In line for Mickey's Fun Wheel. The swinging cars, of course.
Ollie loved the ferris wheel. The swinging always made him laugh.

The Grizzly River Run. Sarah, Brady and I went on this. None of us had ever been on it before so we were all a little nervous about how wet we would get. Luckily we didn't get it to bad.
Survived, and happy!
Sarah got the most wet, and wanted to show it off.
Oliver had fallen asleep by this time and so we did Soarin over California in pairs and then went to use our Radiator Springs fastpasses.

Cars Land was pretty impressive, lots of detail.

The Racers ride was awesome! I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but it's surprisingly good. I'm glad I got to ride it twice. The only other thing we did in Cars Land was eat at Flo's, which was pretty tasty. The other rides didn't call to us.
Sarah and Gigi took Ollie on a ride in Bugs Land while Brady and I rode Tower of Terror. It doesn't look like he liked it.
Tower of Terror was a must, but then the big event, for Ollie at least, was the Pixar Play Parade.

I'm not a fan of parades but watching Oliver watch this parade was my highlight of this trip. We had a spot right in front of the gate that the parade came out of. Such a great view.

He would point out characters he knew. Which is practically all of them.

He loved the Bugs Life float. I think it's because they moved a lot.

Oh no

Buzz Lightyear has been spotted.

He was right there!

Watching Mater drive by.
Not happy it's over.

We did Toy Story Midway Mania. Ollie rode with Gigi and Sarah and they said he loved it. Plus he looked super cute with the 3D glasses on.

Gigi bought Ollie a new Woody. Brady and I bought him a new Buzz to go with it. He still loved them.

Waiting for World of Color

Ollie had his only meltdown of the day before World of Color. He was pretty tired. Then the day was through.

We came home the next day and ready to get back into our routine and new schedule. We loved having a week off to play. Thank you mom for this great trip and fun memories!
