Our Story: We meet...

A little more back story. At this time, one of my roommates was Julie, she was not one to shy away from a guy interested in her and so she would even do the internet dating thing. She didn’t date or meet every guy she met online, but she would chat with them at least. Well, a guy named Brian contacts her through Myspace. She had a video of “Flight of the Conchords” on her page and he had heard some of their songs, so he used it as an excuse to start writing her, since she was cute. (BTW: I introduced her to Flight of the Conchords, and of course she fell in love. Seriously people, they are amazing!) So they emailed and talked on the phone every once and a while for a month, maybe two. They decided that they should hang out so Julie told Brian to bring friends over to our place and she’ll have her roommates there and we’ll play games and what ever. Brian told her that he’ll bring his best friend. Julie got my other roommate Jennifer and myself all excited to have these guys come over just because we wanted to meet some different people then the normal people we see all the time.
Me, Jennifer and Julie

When the time came for them to come over, I wasn’t in a social mood. I don’t know why, I was just feeling grumpy. Well I heard Brian and his friend come in and talking to Julie and Jennifer. I finally joined them and was introduced to Brian and Brady, (“like the bunch”). There was no “love at first sight” or anything, like I said, I wasn’t looking to date anyone. I didn’t take much notice with Brady, I recognized Brian though, I met him really briefly like a year before, he was an old mission companion of my friend Cort; but I don’t think he recognized me, so I never said anything. This night was kind of uneventful in the sense that Brady and I didn’t really talk at all.

We introduced the guys to the awesome game of Ligretto. They didn’t like it since it’s a fast paced game, and they weren’t any good at it. Some friends of my roommates came over and we decided to play a game that Jennifer had made up. The game is to pick a movie and recreate scenes and take pictures using a random object, like a slinky, as the main prop. The other team has to guess what movie you are portraying. We split into two teams, and set out. We debated over the movie to use, even venturing into my bedroom to get some ideas from my movies. Yup, I met Brady and Brian and an hour later they were in my bedroom checking out my movie collection. Very scandalous.

We settled on “Forrest Gump”, I think, and decided to leave the house and go to Wal-Mart to take our pictures. On the way there, everyone decided to change from “Forrest Gump” movie idea to “Tremors”. I suddenly felt inadequate, I hadn’t seen “Tremors” in forever and didn’t remember it, let alone, like it. So everyone had to set things up and I just took the pictures.

And here are the "Tremor" picture highlights:The first pic I ever got of Brady.

The night ended and we had fun and thought that Brady and Brian were fun, but none us were won over by their charm, yet.

The next day was a Stake Talent Show, and Jennifer and Julie were going to be performing a FOTC song, or lip-synching I should say. I was hanging out with Sarah at the show for a little bit. I had told her about the night before and not 2 minutes later, we see Brady and Brian at the show. They were all “Hey, what’s up?” to me and they said that we should all go to Brady’s place later to play Guitar Hero. I told them maybe and left it at that. Later we were debating about whether we should go. We were trying to not hang out with the same people everyday but when it came down to it, we thought what’s two days in a row? So we went. I had never played Guitar Hero before, neither had Jennifer, we had tons of fun playing. While we all chatted, I learned that Brady was going into the Film Production program at ASU. No way! I had just graduated from Scottsdale CC’s film program, emphasis on editing, and Brady also wanted to be an editor! What a coincidence! I still wasn’t really interested.

Tangent: Once thing about Jennifer, she loves nicknames. She would usually make up a nickname for people so she could talk about them without them knowing she’s talking about them (Her phone contact list looked like it was in code). We figured out one for Brian pretty easily however, Brady was hard one to figure a nickname for. We would usually go off of something that stood out about that person, usually something unflattering, yet funny. Brady didn’t have any qualities that stood out that a nickname could come from. He wore glasses, but that’s not funny. He wore a hat all the time, but we kind of liked that, so no nickname. He ended up being “John Doe”.

The day after playing Guitar Hero with the boys, it was a Sunday. And by night time, Jennifer and I were itching so hard to play more GH. We didn’t know anyone else that had the game, but we didn’t want to hang out with the guys three nights in a row. That would put us in the same boat as before, same people, every night. But we really wanted to play. We gave in. Neither of us had their phone numbers so we had to recruit Julie to contact Brian and ask if we could go to Brady’s to play. It sounds so ridiculous now that I’m typing it up, but it happened. Brian text Julie telling us that we could come over and play. Yay!

We all went over to Brady’s place and I saw Brady for the first time without his hat on. I thought he looked so different. We met Brady’s brother, Riley who lived with him (we may have met him the day before, but I can’t remember). We played guitar hero, and Brian and Brady showed us some videos of a ridiculous BBC show that they loved called “The Mighty Boosh”, it was slightly funny, but FOTC is better. Jennifer thought that I should start talking to Brady and get noticed. I was pretty shy and not good at starting conversations so she would be like “Hey Brady! Nicole went to film school too!” and he would be like , “Really?” and then we would talk a little about it. Brady was getting cuter to me and he was really nice and not as crazy as Brian. I start to be interested in him, but no crush... Yet.

The Story of Us

I’ve been meaning to write down the story of Brady and me meeting and stuff leading up to getting married. So I’m going to start now. This is all from my perspective to so I’m going to start a few months before we met. And this will be in separate installments since it's a long story.

The summer before we met, things were pretty quiet for me, and for some reason I started to get into reading the scriptures again and I started to be more active in my ward with activities and meeting people. Not that I was making tons of awesome friends, but I started to feel comfortable in my ward, and make some nice “Sunday friends”. I then started to think of the idea of going to the temple for my own endowments, but not too seriously.

In June 2007 I went to San Francisco with my family for vacation. I absolutely loved it there and it became one of my favorite vacations ever. One of the most memorable moments for me was when we went and walked around the Oakland Temple. I thought this temple was so beautiful and I felt the spirit so strong, I knew then that I wanted to go through the temple. I told my mom while we were there that I wanted to go through. I don’t know if she took me seriously, but I wasn’t kidding.

I started studying the scriptures on temples and read books about the temple. My ward offers a “Temple Prep” class every 3 months so I attended the class. I talked to mom again about going through again and let her know how serious I was about it. She became very supportive, and one Sunday I talked to Bishop Mecham about my desire. He was very excited for me since, he had talked to me about going through when I turned 24, and I was unsure at that time. He told me which scriptures I should read and to attend the temple prep class, which I was at the time.

The day after I had talked to my bishop, some time in late July, I was laid off of my job with Northeast Mortgage. I had been there for about 2 years but I wasn’t loving the job and often dreaded going to work, so the lay off didn’t make me upset, in fact, I felt almost relief to be able to move on and start looking for something I wanted to do. I remember telling my friend Chandra about loosing my job and the first thing she said was “good”, it made me laugh because she knew how much I hated the job.

I started the job search and collecting unemployment benefits, I still had lots of bills to pay. During this time, it was easy to keep up on scripture study and stuff like that. I got all of my temple recommend interviews done and started telling everyone about my next big step. I decided to schedule my first go at the temple for September 14, 2007. My mom helped me decide on this date since it was the day before my cousin Shane was getting married to Lindsey and I would get to attend their sealing, plus, a lot of family will be in town the day before so they could attend my endowment session the day before. I was so excited but when I scheduled this, it was still over a month away, so I was anxious.

The month of August was dry on job opportunities. I had a couple interviews but no job offers. About a week before September 14, the job hunt started to get richer in prospects.

My temple day was awesome. I started to feel a little nervous, but I was mostly excited. My mom and I arrive at 3:00, like we were told. My session was at 5:00. From beginning to end I had butterflies in my stomach, but I felt so happy. The session was really full, so full, that some of the people that came to support me couldn’t get into the session. My Grandma Buckley had to fight her way in, literally, she had to force them to let her in; “My granddaughter is in there, I’m going in!”. Awesome. Some family and friends didn’t get so lucky. Oh well. Walking into the Celestial Room was great. It took me a couple seconds to find my family, but then I spotted them and started crying, along with everyone else, our family is full of cry babies. After my first temple visit.

I was able to attend Shane and Lindsay’s wedding the next day and my friends Chandra and Cort’s wedding a few weeks later. So awesome!

You're probably wondering what all of this has to do with meeting Brady. Well, I felt that these things help prepare me spiritually and emotionally for meeting the man I was to marry. I didn't know it at the time but it's clear to me now.

Things were going so great for me. I was on a spiritual high, corny, huh. My job search was going a lot better and I was sure that I would have a job soon. I was having fun with my roommates and I felt better in this part in my life than ever before. I was not looking to date anyone. Until...

Saturday: Ha Ha Times

Yesterday, Sarah called me around 1:30 asking if she could come hang out because she was bored. So we said yes. We played some Xbox Battleship and while Brady was gone at a meeting, we challenged each other to eat 6 saltine crackers in one minute. We both failed. And made a crumby mess. And got a good laugh. We then got on the computer and started playing around with Photo Booth, I didn't know how much fun this would be. We all went out to dinner with Jenni who just moved here from Chicago. We've been friends since we were 11 years old. After dinner we all went back to our place and played Xbox Sorry!, which was also a blast.

Now for the pictures Sarah and I took. Enjoy!

Some stuff we've done lately

I haven't blogged about our happenings lately so here it is. Last weekend was pretty fun. Brady surprised me last Friday by taking me to Michael's and telling me that he wanted to do a project that I had showed him from the blog I blogged about last week. (colormekatie.blogspot.com).

We bought tons of colorful poster board paper, and cut some of it up, while watching "About a Boy".
We then put it up in our bedroom, since our walls are so bare.
It didn't turn out perfect, but I absolutely love it. I love walking in our room and actually seeing something creative. I was going to put a picture of the original project from the other blog, but mine doesn't look as good. I love sitting under our windy curls

On Saturday, after Brady got a new phone to replace his that is always broken, we went over to Paula and Evans. We did the Great Eclair Challenge where we rated eclairs from different places. We tried finding eclairs at Wal-Mart since they are supposably really good, but we couldn't find any. But we saw this at the bakery while looking.
What is that?

Paula and Evan got eclairs from Fry's and from Bashas'. So let the challenge begin! We rated them by overall taste, presentation, consistency, filling, pastry, frosting and value on a scale from 1-5.The eclairs!

Setup and ready to eat!

Fry's on the left, Bashas' on the right.

I couldn't finish mine, I got full.

Casting my vote.

Votes tallied up and Bashas' was the clear winner, beating Fry's in all categories.

We 3 struck some movies making it all the way through one that was uneven yet surprisingly funny, called "Moving McAllister". It's made by the same people that made the Mormon made "Pride and Prejudice".
We walked around Wal-Mart and then went to eat at Native New Yorker, yummy. We went back to P & E's house and watched another movie.

On Sunday, after church Brady made pulled pork sandwiches, and Riley came over and ate with us. He did laundry at our house and we all watched action movies together, "S.W.A.T", and "Hot Fuzz". I made cookies and fun was had by all.

After a long and busy week, Brady and I went on Friday, or last night, and we went out to eat at Cracker Barrel and went and saw "500 Days of Summer". I LOVED, this movie. It was so good, and funny. I loved the story and how it is told. I recommend it for everyone.

After we got home after midnight, I was surprisingly still awake, so I wanted to leave happy notes on people's cars. Brady humored me and we walked around the parking lot writing silly notes and sticking them on random people's cars. We even left notes on stairs, by the pool and other things, with the Spanish word for those things, since I'm learning Spanish in school.

It was a good night and start to our 3 day weekend.
